Ear pinning surgery is popular among young children with protruding ears, because they are often teased and bullied by their peers.  As a result, parents often take the decision to have their children undergo otoplasty.  Ear pinning surgery can be done on children as young as 5 or 6 years, as long as the ears have finished growing. However, some adults with prominent ears also opt to have ear pinning surgery, to improve their appearance.

How long does ear pinning surgery take?

Ear pinning surgery takes about 2 hours to perform. The procedure is typically carried out under general anesthesia when done on children.

During ear pinning surgery the surgeon will alter the shape of the cartilage in the ear, in order to create the missing folds and draw the ear closer to the head.  Stitches are sometimes used to keep the cartilage in place during healing.  Recovery after ear pinning surgery takes 5-7 days. There is a small scar behind the ear after surgery, but it generally fades over time.
