Common Reasons for Vaginal Itching

Vaginal itching can be a very irritating and embarrassing problem. While most women may occasionally have a vaginal itch, there are times when it becomes a persistent problem, and when this happens medical help is needed. There are  a number of possible causes of vulvovaginal itching, but it requires expert diagnosis to determine the cause, and then recommend the right solution.

What causes vaginal itching?

Perhaps one of the most common causes of a vaginal itching are irritative secretions origination in the vagina. This can include the common types of “vaginitis” including yeast, BV, trichomnas, and atrophic vaginitis PLUS the less  well known spectrum of altered vaginal micro-flora patterns. Other common causes  include skin dermatoses and contact dermatitis.

Sensitivity to soaps and feminine products is another factor. Many of these products are made with chemicals that cause an allergic reaction in some women.  However, in order to alleviate the problem, it is necessary to identify what these irritants are, and then avoid using them altogether. Common irritants are found in some popular feminine products such as tampons, douches, vaginal creams, lotions, shampoos, conditioners and toilet paper.

Treatment option:

Treating vaginal itching is usually simple, once you know what the cause is. That’s the reason why proper diagnosis is paramount. However, the scarcity of medical professionals that specialize in vaginal disorders, often results in a mis-diagnosis of the condition.

At the Fowler GYN International, they specialize in vaginal disorders and are able to accurately diagnose vaginal disorders. They use advanced microscopic techniques using phase-contrast microscopy that enables detection of variants in vaginal flora that are not readily apparent under standard light microscopy as employed by nearly all ob/gyn practices.
