How Long Does LASIK Surgery Last?

Tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses? LASIK surgery may be a good alternative for you. LASIK will improve your vision and reduce your dependence on prescription glasses and contacts, making you feel free and a lot more confident. But what’s the procedure like, and how long does LASIK surgery last?

What is LASIK Surgery?
LASIK (Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis) surgery is a procedure that is done to correct refractive vision problems – nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The operation is carried out with an excimer laser that is used to reshape the inner layers of the cornea. LASIK is an outpatient procedure that takes only a few minutes to perform.

How Long Does LASIK Surgery Last?
LASIK is a permanent solution to refractive vision problems. The operation corrects the corneal imperfections that cause the refractive errors, and in this way, it is able to deliver long lasting results. During the operation a laser is used to fold back a thin layer of the cornea, and then the cornea is reshaped. It is made flatter to correct nearsightedness and steeper to correct farsightedness.

LASIK is a painless procedure, and patients are given anesthetic eye drops before the operation, to numb the eyes. Most patients are able to return to work the day after surgery.

LASIK patients generally have a very high level of satisfaction after the procedure. However, on occasion a patient’s vision problem may progress, and LASIK enhancement may be required.
