How should I prepare for liposuction surgery?

If you have made the decision to have liposuction, it’s essential to make preparations ahead of time, to ensure that the operation goes as smoothly as possible.  But how should you prepare for liposuction surgery?

During consultation with your plastic surgeon be sure to answer all questions about your medical history and previous surgeries truthfully, as this information will be used to make procedural decisions about the operation.

How should I prepare for liposuction surgery?

  1. Maintain a stable weight.  Dieting should be avoided before liposuction surgery, because it can negatively impact the final outcome.
  2. Get lab work done.  Any lab work required by your plastic surgeon should be done at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  3. Stop smoking.  The nicotine in cigarettes can delay healing and increase the risk of post-surgical complications, so you should stop smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery.  You should also refrain from smoking in the weeks immediately following surgery.
  4. Stop blood thinning medication.  Blood thinning drugs such as aspirin should not be taken for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery, as they interfere with the body’s ability to clot.  It is also advisable to stop taking herbal supplements at this time.
  5. Don’t drink alcohol.  Alcohol can also thin the blood and adversely affect healing.
  6. Arrange for assistance.  Make arrangements with a family member or friend to drive you home after surgery, and assist with post-surgical care.
  7. Fill your prescriptions. It’s best to fill prescriptions for post-op medications before surgery, so you don’t have to worry about them after the operation.
