Reasons Why The Vagina May Be Too Tight

There are women who experience extreme pain during intercourse, which can be the result of a vagina that is too tight. However, women with the condition are often not aware that the pain they are experiencing is in any way connected to the caliber  of their vagina.

What causes a tight vagina?

There are times when the underlying muscles of the vagina go into spasm, and this can make the vagina seem too tight. As a result, women often find it difficult to insert tampons, or undergo a pelvic examination. Also, some women seem to naturally have a very tight hymen at the opening of the vagina, and this often makes first-time sex painful.

A tight vagina can also be occasioned by a decline in the level of estrogen in the body, especially during menopause. Estrogen is a hormone that plays a vital role in keeping the vagina healthy. When estrogen is at optimal levels the vagina is elastic, thick, and naturally lubricated. However, if the vaginal walls become thinner and less elastic, this can cause the vagina mucosa to shrink. Vulvar skin dermatoses such as lichen sclerosis and lichen planus can cause the peri-vaginal tissues to shrink and/or become less elastic as well.

Symptoms

Women with a tight vagina often experience sharp pain or soreness during intercourse, and in some cases the vagina may tear. Thereafter, the entire  vaginal area can feel swollen and tender for hours to days. This often makes them reluctant about engaging in intercourse, as the experience is far from being pleasurable.

Treatment

At Fowler GYN International they treat these and other sensitive vaginal issues by doing an accurate diagnosis using advanced diagnostic techniques, and then they develop a customized treatment plan. The changes will not be immediate, as the treatment protocols may take up to 4-6 months to improve the vagina mucosal health and dilate the vagina. Nevertheless, women that have participated in the program attest its effectiveness.
